Today is Chinese New Year's Eve, but the atmosphere in Wuhan is far from festive. The city is under lockdown because of the novel coronavirus. My family and I stayed at home all day. We watched the news and saw doctors and nurses working tirelessly in hospitals. I felt worried but also deeply moved by their courage. In the evening, we had a simple dinner and video-called our relatives instead of visiting them. I wrote in my diary: Stay safe, stay strong. This is a battle we must win together.

Several days into the lockdown, life has become quiet and repetitive. Schools are closed, so I study online at home. Today I read a news report about a nurse who worked for twelve hours without taking off her protective suit. She said she was too busy to feel tired. Her words touched my heart. I also learned that people across the country are donating masks and food to Wuhan. In my English class online, my teacher asked us to write about our feelings. I wrote that although we are isolated, we are not alone. The whole nation is standing with us.

Today my community started delivering vegetables to each household because going out is not allowed. A volunteer brought us a bag of fresh greens and smiled through his mask. I asked him if he was afraid. He said yes, but someone has to do this. I felt a lump in my throat. At night, I watched a short video of a man singing from his balcony, and neighbors answering with cheers. In this difficult time, small acts of kindness and solidarity give us hope. I believe that spring will come, and we will meet again without masks.

Today is the Lantern Festival. Usually we would go out to see lanterns and eat tangyuan with friends. This year, we stayed home and made tangyuan ourselves. My father said that staying at home is our contribution to fighting the virus. I thought about the doctors and volunteers who cannot be with their families tonight. I wrote a short English poem in my diary: Lights may be dim, but hearts are bright. Distance keeps us apart, but love brings us near. I sent it to my classmates online, and they all replied with heart emojis.

Good news today: the number of new cases in Wuhan is decreasing. My mother said we should still be careful. I have been keeping a daily English diary for three weeks now. Looking back, I realize how much I have learned about bravery, sacrifice, and unity. I used to take ordinary days for granted. Now I cherish every meal with my family and every online chat with friends. This epidemic is a hard lesson, but it also shows the best of humanity. I will never forget these days, and I will keep writing until the day we can walk outside freely again.
